Hoggard boys shine in MEC tennis tournament

WILMINGTON, N.C. (WWAY) – Ashley was the site of Wednesday’s Mideastern Conference boys tennis tournament, where the top three singles and doubles pairings would advance to Regionals next month.
Hoggard is leading the team standings and their individual athletes dominated the field. Luke Preston won the singles title over New Hanover’s Owen Alford 7-6, 6-2. Alford still advances to Regionals as does the Vikings’ Bret Li after defeating the Wildcats’ Alistair Dameron 6-4, 6-2in the 3rd place match.
The Hoggard pairing of Ethan Ten Brink and Ashwin Varadarajan beat the Ashley duo of Eli Clamme and Ethan Ziegler 7-6, 6-0 for the doubles title. The Eagles teammates do advance as well as a tandem from New Hanover. Those being brothers Colin and Alex Carter.
