Hoggard football staff and players honored by Wilmington church
WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) — Just days after securing their spot in the state finals, Hoggard Football’s coaching staff and players were honored by the Good News Church for their season.
The celebration was held on Sunday, December 3rd.
Each coach and player was given a certificate and trophy as part of their recognition.
Hoggard head coach Craig Underwood said the timing was perfect, with the team having just secured a spot in the state final on December 1st.
“The church approached with, just saying we really appreciate everything that you’ll do and we appreciate the way your team works,” Underwood said. “And so, you know, now that its the weekend before playing for a state championship, it really makes it all the sweeter to have something like this.”
But the event also meant just as much to the Good Times Church.
It’s a brand new church that held its first two services ever on Sunday.
For Pastor William Oatman, his connection to the team is personal.
“What made you guys want to do something like this, honoring Hoggard? My son, my son and how the coaches have been really working with him for the last 4 years and how he’s grown as a man,” Oatman said. “And we just wanted to send our appreciation. And also, with our church, we want to incorporate sports.”
