Holly Shelter shooting range to open this summer

PENDER COUNTY, NC (WWAY) — A new shooting range will be opening this summer near the Holly Shelter Game Land.

Pender County Planning and Community Development Director Kyler Breuer said finishing touches are underway on the welcome center. Visitors will be required to watch an informational video and sign liability waivers in this building.

Breuer said the county began working with the North Carolina Wildlife Resources Commission on this project, because the area needed a designated area for target shooting.

“Folks were going out into the game lands and doing target shooting which presents an environmental hazard, because not only are we taking down trees with bullets, but also it’s basically expending a lot of lead within the game land,” Breuer said.

Breuer said the county and the WRC will be hiring soon and the shooting range on Shaw Highway will open this summer.
