Honor Flight asking for letters from public to support veterans

WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) — A nonprofit is seeking the public’s assistance in supporting area veterans.

The Honor Flight of the Cape Fear is asking residents to send letters to them, which will be given to veterans thanking them for their service.

The Honor Flight takes veterans on a day trip to Washington, D.C., where they tour the memorials and visit Arlington National Cemetery before returning to Wilmington.

This is the fourth year the Honor Flight has been held, and founder Ruth Ravitz Smith said these letters show veterans how much the community appreciates their service.

“The majority of our veterans these days that travel with us are Vietnam-era veterans,” Smith said. “And part of the history of Vietnam was that they weren’t welcomed home very well. Every step they take in Washington, in Wilmington, they will be thanked. And those letters just reinforce how the community appreciates that they served their country.”

85 veterans will take part in this year’s flight, which is the largest group ever served.

The deadline to send in letters is March 28th and you can find the address to send the letters here.
