Horse Haven in Brunswick County creates a space for education and recreation

BRUNSWICK COUNTY, NC (WWAY) — Across the bridge in Brunswick County, there is a place in Supply delighting visitors and throwing in a bit of learning.

“There’s really there’s something for everybody. Sue and Bill do a really good job of matching people’s passion for the farm with what they want to do,” Volunteer, Susan Mosher said.

Grayce Wynds Farm in Supply is a wild horse preserve that provides rehabilitation to horses. Along with horses, they also have goats, chickens, and other animals.

The farm relies on a group of 40 volunteers to keep things tame. Many of the volunteers, like Margie Nelson, are retired. She called the farm “a form of therapy.”

“I love to just be able to walk around, it’s very peaceful, and the horses are really gentle and fun. They have a lot of big personalities, we have a lot of big personalities here,” Nelson said.

Bill Immen co-owns Grayce Wynds Farm with his wife Sue. He said they have discovered a newfound passion for ponies.

“This actually has reinvented us in retirement. It gives us a purpose and it gives us another side of life that we couldn’t have dreamt of just 15 years ago. It truly has been a wonderful adventure,” Immen said.

Immen said it’s even more rewarding to watch these volunteers and visitors connect with the animals.

Volunteer Susan Mosher said she’s been involved ever since she realized this was practically in her backyard.

“I love these animals, I just, I love these horses. When I first came out here, I was like, ‘how am I gonna remember all their names,’ and now I can see them from the other side of the farm and I know y the way they move which horse it is,” Mosher said.

One unique feature of the farm is “Wild Horse Village.” It’s a mock town that includes a saloon, a schoolhouse, a chapel and more.

The farm also hosts several events throughout the year.
