WWAY

(WWAY) — The holiday weekend is here and the heat arrives with it.

Today and into the holiday weekend a strong upper-level ridge brings high heat and increasing humidity under rain-free skies. It will be mostly sunny with highs today in the middle 90s and upper 90s for highs by Independence Day Saturday. Heat indices will reach as high as 101-105 today but could soar to 104-108 in some spots Saturday. Heat exhaustion or heat stroke could occur with these type numbers and with many outside for the holiday… take breaks in the AC… stay hydrated and wear loose fitting and light-colored clothing. Sunday into early next week it could be even hotter. Look for abundant sunshine Sunday with highs in the mid to upper 90s and afternoon heat indices from 105-110. Monday… the good news is a few afternoon showers and thunderstorms are possible hopefully bringing some much-needed rainfall… however it will still be very hot with highs in the upper 90s and afternoon heat indices from 106-112.  Next Tuesday a surface trough will bring widely scattered showers and thunderstorms along with hot and humid highs in the middle to upper 90s and heat indices from 107-111 in the afternoon. Next Wednesday a cold front is progged to drop down into the area from the north bringing with it scattered showers and thunderstorms but highs remain hot and humid ahead of it reaching the middle 90s. Drought continues to be a very serous concern across southeast North Carolina. Be extremely careful with flame and you are encouraged not to shoot off fireworks for the 4th of July due to the hot temperatures and very dry soils and vegetative fuels.
