(WWAY) — Shower chances are increasing later this week as weather today remains hot and humid.

Today, subtropical high pressure will dominate bringing clouds and sunshine mixed with a few showers and thunderstorms possible and highs in the lower to mid 90s. Wednesday subtropical high pressure dominates across the eastern Carolinas while a cold front approaches the Appalachians. It will be one more hot and humid day with widely scattered mainly afternoon showers and thunderstorms as highs reach the mid 90s. The cold front moves toward the coast and stalls for late week bringing occasional showers and thunderstorms… some with locally heavy rainfall. Highs will drop back into the upper 80s. The front may slide eastward and away from the region by this coming weekend lowering rain chances to 30 to 40 percent with highs in the upper 80s. Rainfall amounts could be quite helpful and at times heavy late this week with as much as 3-5 inches possible in spots which could lead to some minor flooding issues. Also… any thunderstorms this week have the potential to be strong with gusty winds the main severe threat.
