How’s Haiti: Cape Fear Connection weighs in on transitional council

WILMIGTON, NC (WWAY) — Ariel Henry has resigned as Prime Minister of Haiti. A transitional council is now in charge.

WWAY spoke with a Haiti connection in the Cape Fear.

While many hope this change of council could do some good in the country that’s been overwhelmed with gang violence, it’s unclear how long before that change will make a difference.

“So, yes, talking about a transitional council, we hope that’s good news. We also are very hesitant to put too much emphasis on it. Simply because we need relief where we are now and we do not know how long it’s going to be before we see any kind of relief,” Haiti Awake Executive Director Becky Graves said.

Becky Graves is the Executive Director of Haiti Awake. She’s traveled to the country as a missionary several times over the past decade. Her last trip was on March 3rd, when she had to return to the states after only being in Haiti for no more than 48 hours.

Over the last three months, more than 2,500 people have been killed or injured as a result of this ongoing gang violence in Haiti.

Graves said in hearing Thursday’s news, she, her team, and her friends she considers family in Haiti, are trying to remain hopeful.

“Slowly but surely we’re seeing the numbers come back. We’re excited to be there, to be able to serve the community that we’ve invested in, in the last 10 years. Even right now when things are so incredibly difficult,” Graves said.

She said Haiti Awake and the country as a whole has been in a constant cycle of always hoping for the best for years.

Caseus Mirolle is a Haiti resident. He said he hasn’t seen Haiti with such a high level of insecurity before.

Graves said she’s unsure of when her return to the country will be. She said she doesn’t want to be another mouth to feed while its residents have scarce resources at this time.

She said you may be wondering what you can do to help during this difficult time. Here’s a link to Haiti Awake’s page. You can sign up to zoom call with some of the children Graves and her team work with to help keep their spirits high.
