Humpday Health: 12th Annual Turkey Trot
WRIGHTSVILLE BEACH, NC (WWAY) — For many of us tomorrow will be about indulgence, but we have a way to reduce your guilt while you chow down with the family.
For more than a decade people have been lacing up their sneakers on Thanksgiving morning to get in a workout before settling in for a feast with their families.
“We try to tell people the perks to doing this is they can eat Thanksgiving dinner guilt free,” said volunteer coordinator Chris Teeter.
Teeter said the 5K and one mile walk are family and pet friendly, so the whole crew can come out together.
“Last year at the Wrightsville Beach Turkey Trot we had 2,400 people and we’re already ahead of pace this year based on registrations coming in,” Teeter said.
And you still have time to register.
“If people are still wanting to sign up they can sign up on sight at Wrightsville Beach. Registration starts at 7:00 a.m. And our race starts at 8:30 a.m.,” Teeter said.
For the serious runner in the family, there are awards on the line.
“We have age groups and each top three will be getting awards. And then we have top overall male and female that will be getting awards as well,” said Teeter.
Plus there are some more lighthearted awards as well, like best costume. But this race isn’t just about running. Proceeds from the Turkey Trot go to a great cause, Habitat for Humanity.
“Last year the proceeds were enough to sponsor a home and that house finished up a couple months ago and we hope to do the same this year,” Teeter said.
So head over to the Loop at Wrightsville for a new holiday tradition that’s healthy for the whole family.
