Humpday Health: Not all salads are created equal

WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) — Most people think when they grab a salad that it’s a healthy choice, but it might not be. Pre-packaged salads may be easy and look inviting but just because it’s salad doesn’t mean it’s good for you.

“The chicken is processed which adds sodium to it, there’s cheese on both of them, the dressing is way over-portioned,” said health expert Evonne Varady.

Typically you should use about two tablespoons of dressing, but often times pre-made salads will come with several times that amount. If you were to eat an entire salad it would be about 700 calories.

“We could actually just go through a drive thru and probably save calories and fat,” said Varady.

A good way to make sure you’re getting the most out of your salad is to take control for yourself.

“A lot of the faster food services around town, they will provide a better healthy salad you just have to request it,” said Varady.

So what are some good rules to follow when creating your green masterpiece.

“No dressing on the salad that is a major, major thing. Also no cheese. I hate to say that but no cheese,” Varady said.

And make sure to choose lean protein to top it all off.

“This is the perfect time of the year to make salads at home because we have the fresh vegetables coming out of our gardens, tomatoes, cucumbers, peppers,” Varady said.
