Hundreds attend Wilmington walk to defeat ALS
WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) — Hundreds of people came out to participate in the Wilmington Walk to Defeat ALS at UNCW Sunday. This is one of six walks all across the state for ALS.
ALS is a disease that leaves people without the ability to walk, talk and eventually breathe. The organizers said around 1,000 people came out for the walk.
Walkers took a two-mile loop around UNCW and the goal was to raise $130,000. The money goes to funding research and clinics.
“In order to keep up the momentum created from the ice bucket challenge we have to continue to raise money. And so, we believe we can treat and cure ALS and all these great people believe that too and we’re going to do it,” NC Chapter of the ALS Association President Jerry Dawson said.
There was music and other activities for people to enjoy. Last year the six ALS Walks across the state raised more than $1,000,000.
