Hundreds of tires wash ashore in Holden Beach following Sunday’s storm

HOLDEN BEACH, NC (WWAY) — Sunday’s powerful storm churned up more than just waves along parts of the Cape Fear coast.
Several hundred tires from a decades old artificial reef experiment were washed ashore, being strewn the entire length of the beach.
Holden Beach officials say the reef breaks up further and old tires make their way on to the strand from time to time during storms.
Crews are working to get the hazards off the strand, but say it may take a week or more to remove what’s there already with more possibly showing up over the course of the next several days.
People are asked to remain vigilant as there will be extra equipment on the strand as the tires are collected and removed.
