Hundreds volunteer for Surf City clean up

SURF CITY, NC (WWAY) — Hundreds of volunteers were hard at work in Surf City, Saturday morning, cleaning up debris on the streets.

Volunteers walked around the city filling up trash bags with any items they could easily pick up and moving larger pieces out of the roadway. Full bags were left curbside for the Surfs City Parks and Recreation workers to sweep through and pick up.

One resident Shauna Gamble says she lives here, works here and plays here so she wanted to help.

“It was great the town organized this but, a lot of people have been out on the beach [cleaning],” said Gamble.  “Surfer guys are always picking up trash year-round. It doesn’t have to be a special event and then citizen’s groups like to keep our neighborhood clean.”

Gamble says the entire community participated with local restaurants providing lunch for the volunteers after the clean up.

The morning citywide cleaning was held hours before the Surf City Fall Fest, which will include performances, food and games.
