Little concern at Airlie Gardens, where historic trees have seen worse than Matthew

WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) — Despite preparations being made all over Wilmington with Hurricane Matthew looming, things are business as usual at Airlie Gardens.

With strong winds and chances of flooding coming along with Matthew, the grounds crew at Airlie Gardens are doing the basic maintenance. Though earlier this week the scene was different.

“A couple days ago we were kind of in panic mode but now it looks like we’re gonna be in pretty good shape” said grounds supervisor Scott Childs. “If you’re gonna make it through Hazel, unless situations have changed, it should make it through just about any storm we have around here.”

Childs says the only concern that Airlie Gardens faces is the possibility of some of their dead trees to fall during the storm. Their big trees, like the Airlie Oak, are expected to be just fine.
