HURRICANE WARNING issued for southeastern North Carolina


WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) — The HURRICANE WARNING due to Hurricane Matthew has been extended into southeastern North Carolina.

As of 11 a.m. Friday, the warning extends to Surf City and includes Brunswick, New Hanover and Pender counties. A hurricane warning means hurricane conditions are expected within the specified area.The warning is issued 36 hours in advance of the anticipated onset of tropical-storm-force winds.

This warning came after the latest track of Hurricane Matthew shifted more to the north, which means an increased likelihood that the Cape Fear Coast will feel greater effects.

Emergency officials have issues voluntary evacuations for coastal, low-lying and flood-prone areas around the region. Shelters are open to help people who need a place to go.
