Police: 16 fatal crashes, 445 DWI arrests on I-40 over holiday weekend

WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) — Troopers were out in full force to monitor traffic violations in hopes of reducing crashes this Thanksgiving.

The results from I-40 Challenge have been released and we’re getting a look at numbers of just how many crashes and violations there were.

Troopers were placed every 20 miles along the major interstate during the most heavily traveled periods this past Wednesday and Sunday.

The highway patrol says there were 16 fatal collisions and 445 DWI arrests statewide.

In our region, there were no fatal collisions on I-40 and 5 DWI arrests on I-40.

There were nearly 25,000 total citations issued statewide.
