North Carolina Department of Transportation officials prepared for the reopening of Interstate 40 in Haywood County with a preview and speaking event on Thursday, Feb. 27.

The section of I-40 is set to officially reopen with traffic reduced to one lane in each direction through the Pigeon River Gorge on Saturday, March 1.

The road has been closed near the Tennessee state line since late September after Hurricane Helene caused flooding and mudslides.

The road was initially scheduled to reopen by Jan. 1, 2025, but a new washout in December 2024 forced the road to remain closed.
