IKEA submits plans to open store in Cary

CARY, NC (WWAY) — A second IKEA could be coming to North Carolina.

The company announced it is submitting plans to build a store in Cary. The proposed 15-acre site would be located near I-40 and Cary Towne Boulevard, near the existing Cary Towne Center.

According to a news release, IKEA is proposing a 359,000 square foot store and two-level parking structure with 1,000 parking spaces. If approved, the IKEA Cary store could open as early as Summer 2020.

The IKEA in Charlotte opened in 2009.

“We are excited about the opportunity for a potential second North Carolina IKEA store at this location in Cary,” said IKEA U.S. president Lars Petersson.  “A store in the Raleigh area would complement our strong presence established in Charlotte and eventually provide customers in Central and Eastern North Carolina an IKEA store closer to them.”

The store would feature nearly 10,000 exclusively designed items, 50 room-settings, three model home interiors, a supervised children’s play area and a 450-seat restaurant.

Cary is currently considering a rezoning for part of the existing center that would be demolished during the initial phase of a redevelopment which would include the IKEA.
