Inaugural Cape Fear Highland Games celebrate Scottish heritage

WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) — The first-ever Cape Fear Highland Games brought Scottish traditions to the Port City Saturday.

Traditional events included tossing the caber, throwing the hammer and much more. The day-long festival also celebrated Scottish tradition with a gathering of clans, live music, great food and beers from North Carolina.

One competitor said she has been training at UNCW for this event.

“It’s really similar to track and field, but we have all the equipment at home,” said Mallory Clayton, who has been competing for more than a year now. “We are from Wilmington, so we practice over at UNCW a couple times a week.”

Clayton says she got involved through her boyfriend, because she didn’t want to sit on the sidelines. Since then, she’s competed in five games and is glad Wilmington is now a new location for the Highland Games.
