WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) — Recently, there’s been an increase in wild animal encounters. In particular, more sightings of coyotes in some areas of the Cape Fear.

According to NC Wildlife, there has been an increase in coyote sightings in New Hanover and Pender counties.

Wildlife officials, urge you to stay aware of your surroundings — especially if you own a small pet because coyotes, are predators.

Clayton Ludwick with the North Carolina Wildlife Resources Commission explains why we’re seeking more coyotes.

“I believe it is due to the amount of development in New Hanover, Pender, Brunswick Counties. We are taking away different habitats from those natural animals where they live so they have no other places to really go to,” Ludwick said.

In terms of other wildlife, deer mating season is over, wildlife officials say this is the last week of hunting season.

That means there could be an uptick in car-deer accidents as the animals try to run away from hunters.
