Interim Wilmington Police Chief Donny Williams appointed to permanent role
WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) — Wilmington City Council has named Interim Wilmington Police Chief Donny Williams to the permanent role.
Williams took over the role of interim chief on February 1 after former Chief Ralph Evangelous retired.
Williams has been with the department for 30 years. He gained experience as a Summer Youth Worker and police cadet before being sworn in as a police officer in December of 1992.
“We look forward to a lot of great things from Chief Williams,” said Wilmington Mayor Bill Saffo.
Williams addressed council and the public after being named permanent chief Tuesday evening.
“We want to make our community a greater place,” Williams said. “It’s already a great place, but we want to make it a greater place.”
Williams also acknowledged his past.
“People will look at a lot of firsts with me. Some of the firsts I want them to think about is, I’m the first police cadet to be a chief. I’m the first resident of public housing in the City of Wilmington to be a police chief. My story is proof that you can truly do anything if you put your mind to it,” Williams said.
Williams also thanked the community for their support, his family, and those in law enforcement who gave him opportunities along the way.
