Intrigue surrounds upcoming ACC hoops season
CHARLOTTE, NC (WWAY) — Last season, the ACC proved to be the top conference in the country with North Carolina taking home the National Championship. But that was last year. Today at ACC Media Day, it was all about what’s ahead.
A storyline we are following closely here in our area is the first season for former UNCW Head Coach Kevin Keatts up in Raleigh. Fans in our area know that Coach Keatts can certainly turn a program around, but he says that will only come if his team competes.
“When I was able to go out on the caravans and meet a lot of NC State fans, the one thing that came back to me is that they wanted to see a product that would compete every night and that’s what I’m looking for.” Coach Keatts said.
It’s not Charleston or Elon Keatts will be coaching against, he now gets the task of trying to out coach legends like Roy Williams and Mike Krzyzewski. Coach K’s team in Durham is expected by many to be the top ranked team in the conference for the second year in a row.
“We’re big,” Krzyzewski said. “We’re the youngest team that we’ve had since the early 80’s but we’re very athletic. Just an average shooting team right now and hopefully we’ll be a great rebounding team.”
Let’s not forget about the defending champs. North Carolina will be without their top assistant C.B. McGrath and many other seniors that helped lead this team to a title. Now with a target on their backs, Coach Roy Williams has to change his tactics to keep the team focused on a repeat and a third straight Final Four appearance.
“Last year I was able to use the feeling that they had in the locker room, of pain agony and all those type of things, to use that as fuel,” Williams said. “I used that as motivation to work extremely hard in the offseason. This year I just try to appeal to their pride. Let’s be the best that we possibly be and work as hard as we possibly can.”
Only one team hoist the conference crown, who will bring it home this year?
