Investing in education as county commissioners and Board of Education discuss capital projects

WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) — The New Hanover County Board of Education and county commissioners took part in a joint meeting Wednesday morning to discuss capital projects for the school board.

Capital projects include new schools, renovations to existing schools, and other additions, like portable classroom trailers.

A presentation focused on issues such as being able to handle more students and the need to modernize existing schools such as New Hanover High School.

County commissioner Dane Scalise said the school board needs to figure out what its priorities are soon.

“Obviously we want to do everything that we can to make sure that the students of New Hanover County are well taken care of,” Scalise said. “And we do, we lead the state on this issue. But money is not unlimited and we got to make sure that we are prudent in the way that we spend our money, so we’re asking the school board to take a good, hard look at what the true priorities are and bring those to us.”

Scalise also said none of the projects mentioned at the meeting are being considered at this time and there is no timeline for when work on any capital projects might begin.
