Island Women take charge cleaning up from renourishment on Carolina Beach

CAROLINA BEACH, NC (WWAY) — Beach renourishment restores the sand that gets washed into the ocean over time. Without it, waves can reach houses and streets, even in low tide.

There’s no question renourishment is a needed process, but “as they’re pumping the sand in some of the debris that was blown in with the sand is being washed back into the shore so that’s why you find massive piles of it,” says Trudie Duart.

A few ladies of Carolina Beach’s Island Women make it their duty to pick up as much debris as possible every time they go for their morning walk. They find all kinds of junk like cigarettes butts, sunglasses, candy wrappers, shoes and straws that kill turtles.

Sue LoBalbo brought this important matter to Carolina Beach’s attention. She says their services keep the beach experience priceless. “I’m getting paid in having a beautiful beach to come to and not having to sit in the garbage and in the trash,” explains LaBalbo.

These ladies plan to bring the entire group together to continue collecting trash for as long as necessary, and encourage others to do the same.

Kelly McAndrew says that her “habit is to take a bag with me and really clean up a debris field.”
