It’s official! NC-SC state line finalized

WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) — Some time in the early 1700s the Province of Carolina split into two colonies called North Carolina and South Carolina. Three centuries later, the border between the now states is finally official.

Gov. Pat McCrory signed Executive Order 118 this week finalizing the boundary line between the state of North Carolina and South Carolina from Polk County to Brunswick County.

“This Executive Order is a culmination of more than 20 years of work from leaders in North and South Carolina,” McCrory said in a news release. “I am proud of our efforts to settle this issue and our strong partnership with Governor Nikki Haley and our neighbors in South Carolina.”

According to the governor’s office, efforts to clarify the boundary between North and South Carolina began in 1995. In May 2013, the Joint North Carolina/South Carolina Boundary Commission completed its work to settle the boundary line. In June 2016, Gov. McCrory signed legislation identifying the new border, which goes into effect on Jan. 1, 2017. The bill addressed tax, education and property concerns for several impacted communities.
