Jacksonville man charged in Fayetteville shooting death

FAYETTEVILLE, NC (AP) — Fayetteville police have charged a Jacksonville man with first-degree murder in the weekend shooting death of his brother-in-law.

Police said in a statement that 33-year-old Joseph Jerome Smith was shot early Sunday morning at a Fayetteville residence. Smith was later pronounced dead a local hospital.

Authorities say that he and his wife had an argument when Smith’s brother-in-law, 26-year-old Don Isiah Holmes Jr., came to the residence and confronted Smith.

Holmes is charged with murder. He surrendered to authorities in Pender County later Sunday.

Holmes has been returned to Fayetteville. It was not immediately known if he had an attorney.
