Jerry Wainwright reflects on his return to coaching; reunites with Rodney Terry

FRESNO, CA (WWAY) — Former UNCW head men’s basketball coach Jerry Wainwright won’t be hanging around his grandchildren as much this upcoming season. Wainwright has decided to return to the coaching bench after a full year off from basketball. Wainwright isn’t returning to UNCW; instead, he’s heading back to Fresno State where he served as an assistant coach during the 2011-12 basketball season under Rodney Terry. “I’ve had an unbelievable run, and I missed it,” Wainwright said on Monday. “I don’t listen to Barry Manilow. I listed to Tupac. I am kinda out of sorts back in the community, but Wilmington is a great town with great people. It’s always been a part of my life and my family is there. My son started four freshmen and a sophomore last year. That was kinda hard to watch and I miss those two little girls, but we’ll have to see them grow up lord willing at a different time.”

Call it a reunion. Rodney Terry served an assistant coach for four years at UNCW when Jerry Wainwright was the head coach. Wainwright for the season time will served under Rodney Terry. “I think he is excited about the opportunity to come back,” per Rodney Terry on Jerry Wainwright’s return to Fresno. “He was here at the very beginning when we started and it’s going to be great coming here with the guys that we have right now.”

Jerry Wainwright has been a head men’s basketball coach at UNCW, Richmond and DePaul. Wainwright will wear the associate head coach title at Fresno State.
