Crews extinguish fire at metal recycling facility

NEW HANOVER COUNTY, NC (WWAY) — The Fire Marshal says flames are under control after a fire sparked at a metal recycling facility off Highway 421 early Thursday.

The New Hanover County Fire Marshal says a passerby called to report the flames at the OmniSource Corporation facility just after 5 a.m. Crews say it started when a small sparked yesterday on one of the facility’s conveyors, and one of the embers was not extinguished.

The Fire Marshal says the ember started a fire in one of the piles in a concrete enclosure, which continued to spread. Crews say there was no damage to the facility’s structure or machinery. There were no reports of injuries.
