WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) — A 17-year-old is in custody following a shooting last week on Greendale Drive that left another teenager injured.

According to the Wilmington Police Department, the juvenile was taken into custody late last week. The juvenile has now been charged with assault with a deadly weapon with intent to kill or inflict serious injury.

The charge stems from a shooting that happened Tuesday night, Jan. 20, in the 200 block of Greendale Drive.

Police said officers responded around 7:38 p.m. after receiving a ShotSpotter alert in the area. When officers arrived, they found a 17-year-old male victim inside a residence. Investigators determined the shooting occurred in the backyard of the home following an altercation involving multiple juveniles.

The victim was taken to Novant Health New Hanover Regional Medical Center with non-life-threatening injuries. Police said the victim declined to cooperate with detectives.

The investigation remains ongoing. Anyone with information is encouraged to contact the Wilmington Police Department or submit tips anonymously through the Tip 411 app.
