Kermit, Miss Piggy latest Hollywood couple to call it quits

It’s been a rough week for celebrity couples, with several announcing break-ups. The latest is one of the longest lasting power couples in Hollywood.

Kermit the Frog and Miss Piggy are splitting up.

Kermit first made the announcement today at the Television Critics Association summer press tour. The couple also posted matching statements to their official Facebook and Twitter accounts.

“After careful thought, thoughtful consideration and considerable squabbling, Kermit the Frog and moi have made the difficult decision to terminate our romantic relationship,” Miss Piggy’s post reads.

But not all is lost. The stars of stage and screen say theirs is an amicable parting that will not disrupt their new show “The Muppets,” which debuts Sept. 22 on ABC and WWAY.

Variety reports the executive producers of “The Muppets” said the series would have a mockumentary flavor and revolve around the backstage antics at “Up Late with Miss Piggy,” as well as the personal lives of Miss Piggy, Kermit, Fozzie Bear and other beloved Muppet characters.

Kermit and Miss Piggy had been together since at least the 1970s, when they starred in the hit TV variety show “The Muppet Show” and began a string of successful movies, including “The Muppet Movie,” and “The Great Muppet Caper.” The pair also starred in the 1999 film “Muppets in Space,” which filmed in Wilmington.
