Kids receive certificates as Cop Camp comes to an end

WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) —  The Wilmington Police Department’s Cop Camp finished up today, and everyone seemed to have a great time.

WPD has been hosting the cost-free Cop Camp for 4th and 5th graders since 1995.

The experience lasts five days.

Children participate in recreational activities, field trips, educational experiences and a community service project.

A Wilmington firefighter, who actually attended cop camp as a 5th grader, came back this year as a counselor, and said it was a great experience.

“I feel old, I feel very old. I actually got to take a picture with Assistant Chief Williams and also Captain Kennedy who were both just regular police officers back when I went to Cop Camp in 5th grade. So to come back, and hopefully have the same effect on kids that they had on me, it’s a real good feeling,” said Michael Lee.

As camp finished up, the boys and girls watched a video montage from the last week, and were presented with a certificate, a group photo, and a gift bag.
