Kids write their way to a better future

WILMINGTON (WWAY) — Rapping for literacy, that’s what a group of kids are doing at the New Hanover Public Library every month.

They’re recording a song which will be added to an album coming out this summer.

It’s begins with a piece of paper, a pencil, and one creative mind.

Hayes says, “Research has shown children that are good at rhyming are good at reading and what better way of improving rhyming skills then by writing a rap song.”

Scooter Hayes, a Librarian at the New Hanover County Public Library, created a program called the Rap club.

“I’ve written a couple rap songs myself and when I started working at the library, I found it’s a great way to connect the kids and connect to literacy.”

No matter what the subject is, “Favorite books, ice cream, you name it, it’s just whatever we are
kind of feeling on the day, and today we are rapping about pizza,” said Hayes.

Rap club began back in 2012, and with a grant from Friends of the Public Library it continues today.

It’s not just the program that appeals to the kids but it’s man who puts it all together.

Alison Pond, a frequent attendee said, “When you’re around him it makes it easier to do these kinds of
things, makes it easier to rap and have fun and learn about reading and words.”

Scooter Hayes says, ” Understand that the library is a fun place and that making up their
own songs is a creative way to become a life long learner and a life long reader.”

The program is open for kids 8 and up. If you want to attend the Rap club, the next class is this Friday at Northeast Library.
