Kites take flight at the Cape Fear Kite Festival

KURE BEACH, NC (WWAY) — The Cape Fear Kite Festival kicked off Friday at the Kure Beach Pier. This annual event always draws a good crowd.

Visitors can enjoy the kite-flying action from the beach or view it from the pier.

Some kite-flyers, like Cassie Shooks, traveled from all over for this weekend’s festivities.

She shares, “This event has been going on for a while and it’s legendary. Like, it’s amazing—basically a giant fun fly which we as kite flyers love because the schedule of events is super loose. All of us get to come out and see our friends from all over the country. Last year we had someone from England come fly with us, so literally we get to fly kites with our friends and interact with the public and share our love for putting things in the air.”

Friday night, kites will light up the sky from 7 to 9 p.m.

The festival continues over the weekend from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m., featuring over one hundred kites in the air at Fort Fisher.
