Kure Beach hosted fishing tournament for disabled

KURE BEACH, NC (WWAY) — For the 12th year in a row Kure Beach hosted the Cape Fear Disabled Sportsman’s Fishing Tournament. About 300 fishermen and women turned out for the event at the Kure Beach pier. Participants were provided fishing equipment, food and t-shirts.

It is a day of free fishing for people with any disability.

“For the majority of them, this is a social event,” said tournament director Dawson Frueler. “Where you and I may have been in a home or something years ago and then you moved and a lot of times those folks don’t have access to cell phones or cars, so this here is the social event for them, where they can get together and see their friends, and it’s so neat really come together.”

Organizers said the event would not be possible without generous donations from the community.
