WILMINGTON, N.C. (WWAY) — On the final day of the Wilmington Classic, Laney baseball managed to edge Sun Valley 3-2 on Wednesday.

The Bucs were in some early trouble by facing a 1-0 deficit and the bases loaded with only one out. Starting pitcher Dom Civelli then picked off a chopper and threw home for the force out, resulting in a 1-2-3 double play to get out of the jam.

Then in the 5th, Carston Wedemeyer’s RBI double to left field managed to tie the game. The Spartans immediately made a pitching change only for the next pitch to result in a Brock Downing infield single. The first baseman for Sun Valley then threw to third to try and pick off Wedemeyer, only for it to go wide. Wedemeyer then scored on the error to take the lead just two pitches after trailing.

After going up 3-1 in the 7th, a solo home run for the Spartans cut the lead in half. Taunting from the Sun Valley dugout resulted in a warning and their coach was ultimately ejected, giving Laney all the momentum back they had just lost. Two outs later, the game was over.
