Large turnout as Good Shepherd Center distributes Thanksgiving groceries and turkey vouchers in Wilmington

NEW HANOVER COUNTY (WWAY) — Hundreds of people lined up around the Good Shepherd Center for groceries and Thanksgiving turkey vouchers Wednesday on Wilmington.

The Good Shepherd Center gives away groceries each week, but today, they were also handing out turkey vouchers for the upcoming holiday.

Volunteers passed out baked goods and vegetables, along with free turkey vouchers and packaged Thanksgiving meals.

Lots of people show up each week, but workers say today was the largest turnout ever.

Meagan Hutchings is the center’s Senior Director of Development.

She says they wouldn’t be able to help so many without community partners.

“We are ready to serve, I mean, I think the only way that we can do that though is our community partnerships, and this year, you know, we faced challenges at Good Shepherd, and so what we have seen are community partners who are willing to step up and make this type of thing possible. So, the sense of community in Wilmington is what makes an event like this so powerful,” said Hutchings.

The Good Shepherd Center gives away groceries every Wednesday from noon to 1 pm, and they’re located at 811 Martin Street in Wilmington.
