Law enforcement agencies across New Hanover Co. honor fallen heroes

WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) — Law enforcement agencies across New Hanover County came together at the Wilmington police department to honor those have fallen in the line of duty.

Wilmington Police Chief Ralph Evangelous said they have been doing this memorial every year for more than three decades.

During the ceremony, Evangelous read out each fallen officer’s name going back more than a hundred years. A family member and a law enforcement officer then placed a rose on a wreath.

Evangelous said it is about recognizing the officer’s sacrifice and their family’s sacrifice.

“Right now, over 40, 42 officers have been killed already since January in the United States, so it’s a tough time for our men and women out there, so they need to know that we care,” Evangelous said. “They need to know, if that were to occur, that we’re not going to forget about them, and the family needs to know that we’re still there for them.”

The New Hanover County Sheriff’s oOffice was there along with the officers from the Carolina Beach Police Department, Wrightsville Beach, Kure Beach, the Highway Patrol, and all of the other agencies in the county.
