Dozens of people gather in Castle Hayne to try their hand at lawn mower racing
CASTLE HAYNE, NC (WWAY)– The lawn mower, one of the greatest racing vehicles anyone could ever ride.
In one of the most unique events to kick off the new year, Prosperity Motorplex hosted “New Year’s Mud Bash”, a free event for people to either participate in or watch.
Located on Prosperity Lane, in Castle Hayne, the event featured lawn mower games, mud drag racing, and an obstacle course.
David Allen, one of the owners, says the idea came to him after watching a video online, which lead to inviting his neighbors for some fun.
“Everybody has lawnmower in their neighborhood, everybody has them, they are just sitting in the neighborhood. Most of them get it for free, and so it’s easy to play”, said Allen.
For over five years, Allen has hosted events like these, whether it be mud racing or having a barbecue.
Allen says it’s all about having fun and bringing together the community–a community that has reached way beyond Castle Hayne.
“We have people that are all the way from Richmond Virginia. They come from Richmond, Waverly, and Myrtle Beach. They come here to just have fun. Everybody loves everybody and has fun”, said Allen.
Carl Wilson, the other owner of the Motorplex, says the neighborhood is always supportive of the events. Wilson says they always try to do something special based on the time of year.
“Last year we had a little parade around the neighborhood on the 4th of July. When we did the lawn mower race on the 4th, the neighbors followed us in, and we all had a good time”, said Allen
After hearing so much about the lawn mower racing, it’s only natural that WWAY’s Bryan Alonso had to try it out for himself. Alonso says he had a mud-tastic time
“This is probably the craziest thing I have ever done!”, said Alonso.
Prosperity Motorplex will host a dirt bike event on January 10th.
