Lawsuit against CFCC dropped in court: Plaintiff and former student responds
WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) — A lawsuit filed against Cape Fear Community college has been dismissed.
The lawsuit, which was filed by former student Camryn Young, accused the college of mistreating, and unfairly dismissing Young from her sonography program. Young alleged that her instructors lowered her grades, avoided assisting her in class, and participated in a scheme to remove her from the program.
Young says she believes this started after a graduate of the program, who Young claims was close to faculty, encouraged instructors to treat Young unfairly. In late January, a superior court judge dismissed the lawsuit, siding with the college.
“I don’t really hold much faith in the legal system anymore after that interaction because the evidence was provided in answers to the lawsuit, and it was provided in answers to the defendants,” Young said in response to the court’s decision.
Despite the ruling in favor of CFCC, a spokesperson for the college confirmed it did not renew the contracts of two of the instructors allegedly involved with actions against Young.
Cape Fear Community College released the following statement regarding the lawsuit:
“Cape Fear Community College and its employees were recently dismissed from a lawsuit filed by a former student in our medical sonography program. Based on our obligations under the Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA), the College and its employees are restricted from discussing this matter because it involves the former student’s academic and educational records and history. While we dispute these allegations, we wish this former student well in their future endeavors.”
