Leland church hosts annual Ash Wednesday event; offering blessings from the car
LELAND, NC (WWAY-TV) – Christians all over the world including in Wilmington and Leland kicked off the start of Lent by the displaying of ashes on Ash Wednesday.
The Bridge Presbyterian Church in Leland hosted their annual drive-thru event for imposing ashes which symbolize repentance and human fragility. This was the church’s 7th annual community drive-thru located on Lanvale Road.
Participants remain in their cars as they receive a cross made of ashes on their forehand or their hand.
Dr. Doug Cushing, pastor of the church said they began hosting a drive-thru during the COVID-19 pandemic when congregants could not attend church in-person.
“So we’ve been doing it ever since and we’ve found that there are a tremendous amount of people that come many of them come year after year because of the blessing that they receive,” Cushing said.
Cushing said the ashes are a reminder of human mortality and salvation through Jesus Christ.
