Leland Police Department gets new forensic equipment

LELAND, NC (WWAY) — It’s been about a year since Leland Police say they applied for a forensic equipment improvement grant. They say the department is beginning to get in some of its new equipment like two new alternative light source kits. The kits are used for detecting things like fibers, bodily fluids and fingerprints.

Investigators say instead of having to depend on other agencies they will be able to do a lot more forensic investigative work in-house.

Lieutenant Jeremy Humphries says forensics is a big part of solving crimes and having this equipment is vital.

“It’s important to us because it increases our capabilities. And it cuts down the chain of custody as far as evidence goes,” said Humphries.

The Leland Police Department was awarded a more than $23,000 grant.
