Dashcam video shows fatal shooting involving Leland officer

LELAND, NC (WWAY) — We are learning more about what happened the night a Leland police officer was shot six times before he shot and killed another man.

The Leland Police Department just released the dashcam video from Ofc. Jacob Schwenk’s car when he responded to a suspicious person call on Dec. 9. (WARNING: The full video of the incident is above. “You never what you’re going to be given in any call, whether it’s during the day or during the night,” Leland Police spokesman Lt. Jeremy Humphries said.

That night Ofc. Schwenk stopped Brent Quinn on Bridgeport Way and asked him to turn his car off and then put his beer down.

Autopsy reports show Quinn’s blood alcohol content was 0.26 that night.

“Keep your hands where I can see them,” Schwenk said as he approached the car.

Humphries says it only took a second for everything to change.

“We are talking about a breath, you know a breath, a heartbeat, for a situation to go from whatever it is to drastic,” Humphries said.

Schwenk was shot six times, including several times in the leg and once in the chest.

“He is still working with his physicians,” Humphries said of Schwenk’s recovery.

Schwenk managed to shoot and kill Quinn during the exchange before falling to the ground.

Another officer who responded applied a tourniquet to Schwenk’s leg to help save his life.

“We’re hoping he is back in the next couple of months,” Humphries said.

As to why this all happened, Humphries says investigators do not know. We may never know, but Humphries says every day, every one of their officers comes to work knowing they may never go home.

“They do this job because it’s something that they want to do,” he said. “They’re here because they want to make a difference.”

In January, District Attorney Jon David held a news conference to announce Ofc. Schwenk was justified in shooting Quinn.
