LGBT documentary shows the importance of being a part of history
WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) — A documentary showing an inside look into the lives of LGBT folks from the past brought people out to the Hannah Block Historic USO tonight for a screening.
‘Reel in the Closet’ uses home video footage to explore what it was like living through pivotal moments in our history from a queer perspective. Director Stu Maddux was at the screening taking questions from the audience afterwards.
Maddux said he hopes people take away the idea that everyone plays a key role in creating our history.
“No matter who they are, they are history just by the virtue of living through the times that we’re living through. Whether they’re 20 or 80. And that their story is important for them to tell,” said Maddux.
During the question and answer portion Maddux encouraged people to hold on to person momentos of history like photographs and flyers. He said to keep them in a box marked “archive.” He said you never know when a researcher will want your bits of history.
