LGBTQ community saddened and scared by New Hanover County EDI committee decision

WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) — It’s been several days since the Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion Committee was dissolved by the New Hanover County Board of Education.

The LGTBQ community became the latest group to voice their concerns about the decision, joining the National Black Leadership Caucus which expressed outrage during a press conference held this past Friday morning.

Kelley Finch is the lead pastor of Mosaic United Methodist Church, which she describes as a social justice church.

Finch said this decision will prevent many children from being represented and cared for in schools.

“Its not only scary but it is leading to things that will create a community where we are not safe,” Finch said. “Where our young children will not have a voice, where many don’t even want to go to school anymore. It is hate-filled and it is ugly.”

WWAY reached out to the New Hanover County School Board and the members who voted to dissolve the committee…but have not heard back.
