License Plate Agency in Shallotte closes; 5th closure in SENC this year

SHALLOTTE, NC (WWAY) — The N.C. Division of Motor Vehicles’ license plate agency in Brunswick County closed today, Dec. 20, at the end the current operator’s contract.

The agency, at 5300 S. Main St., Suite A, in Shallotte, has been operated by Deborah Meadows since 1982.

It is the 5th LPA to close in Southeastern North Carolina in 2023.

LPAs offer vehicle registration services and title transactions, as well as vehicle license plate renewals, replacement tags and duplicate registrations.

NCDMV announced in November an application period for a new contractor in Brunswick County and plans to open a location there under a new contractor as soon as possible.

“We’re trying to work through that process as quickly as we can; it takes a bit of time,” says NCDMV Communications Manager Marty Homan. “We have a training class for those new operators already scheduled for after the first of the year, so we hope to have these offices back up and running in February, if not sooner.”

In the meantime, three nearby license plate agencies offer service Monday through Friday:

Bolivia, 30 Government Dr. NE, from 8 a.m.-5 p.m.
Whiteville, 201 E. Main St., from 9 a.m.-5 p.m.
Wilmington, 2390 Carolina Beach Rd., Suite 108, from 9 a.m.-5 p.m.
