Loaded with talent UNCW Baseball ready for big 2021

WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY)–The last time UNCW Baseball was on the field was March 11th, 2020. It was a game that ended in walk-off win for the Seahawks over rival ECU. The season would be canceled just days later due to covid-19 and lead to months of uncertainty.

Second year head coach Randy Hood says even with nearly a year off this team could be in for a special season.

“We are just looking forward to competing and looking forward to getting an opportunity to start next week against Virginia Commonwealth,” says UNCW head coach Randy Hood. “Then we will just see how things go. I think if we stay healthy and everybody stays on pace with what we feel we should be doing we’re going to be sitting pretty good at the end of the season.”

UNCW has plenty of reasons to be optimistic this season. The Seahawks have 28 players returning from last years roster, highlighted by Colonial Athletic Association Preseason Player of the Year Landen Roupp. The teams depth doesn’t stop there with three other players on the CAA all-conference team.

“It’s definitely going to be hard with hitters and experienced hitters coming back more this year than ever,” says UNCW redshirt-junior Landen Roupp. “Every year I mean you have guys that you pitched against last year and new guys that you haven’t seen or haven’t seen you. So, I mean you got to stick with what we’ve all learned and I think that we should be fine with that with our rotation and our bullpen.”

The Seahawks will begin the season next weekend against VCU followed up by 11 straight home games at Brooks Field. The group of upperclassman say they will take nothing for granted this year and will be ready to go from the first pitch.

“Everyday at practice I look at these guys and I’m like man we’re a really talented group,” says UNCW redshirt-senior Zachary Bridges. “You just have a whole new appreciation after everybody lost a season last year. I look at these guys work hard everyday and just get after it. Everybody just wants to play somebody else besides each other now and I think we’re really ready for VCU and every other game after that.”

UNCW games will be streamed online at UNCWSports.com and FloSports.
