Local basketball clubs collect donations for hurricane victims

WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) — Area travel basketball clubs spent Saturday collecting donations for those impacted by Hurricane Matthew at the Wilmington Basketball Center in Ogden.

While the Cape Fear Warriors, the Port City Select, Halo Excel and the Wilmington Waves are normally rivals on the court, they pushed that aside this weekend and came together for a good cause.

Danica Greene, a volunteer at Wilmington Basketball Center, says they collected clothes, shoes, sanitary supplies, water and more.

“While our main goal is to help all the victims of the hurricane,” Greene said. “We also want to teach our kids how important is it to give back to the community.”

Greene says they plan to deliver the donations to the Wayne County Salvation Army Sunday.
