Local organization honors Vietnam Veterans

BELVILLE, NC (WWAY) –National Vietnam War Veterans Day, observed annually on March 29, is a time for Americans to honor and remember those who served during the Vietnam War. This year, the Leland VFW Post 12196 hosted a special ceremony at the Belville Riverwalk to commemorate the occasion and pay tribute to Vietnam veterans.
The event recognized all individuals who served on active duty in the U.S. Armed Forces during the Vietnam War era, from November 1, 1955, to May 15, 1975. Veterans were presented with the Vietnam Veterans Lapel Pin as a symbol of gratitude for their service.
Army Brigadier General Dan Hickman, a decorated military leader with numerous awards, took part in the ceremony. In his remarks, he emphasized the importance of acknowledging the sacrifices made by Vietnam veterans, ensuring they receive the same respect and gratitude extended to veterans of other conflicts.
“It’s a day to remind all Americans that their duty, honor, and sacrifice are not bound by time, and that the men and women who served in Vietnam deserve the same gratitude and respect we extend to veterans of every conflict,” said General Hickman.
The ceremony also honored those classified as “Vietnam Era Veterans.” In addition to the veterans, family members were invited to participate, with the opportunity to pick up a pin on behalf of a loved one who served.
