Local teachers go reverse trick-or-treating
WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) — Halloween is only a few days away and many New Hanover County teachers spent the Friday afternoon giving their students some goodies.
Books, candy, and lots of hugs were passed out to students as teachers from Mary C. Williams Elementary School rode around Wilmington to their homes.
“We want to encourage reading,” Teacher Ethel Wasserberg said. “We want to encourage the excitement of reading.”
Wasserberg says the school’s Hispanic population is a 65%, so this gives her a way to connect with them in special way.
“We like to go to their communities and learn about them,” Wasserberg. “Everybody gets to learn and experience about where they live and how they live and to see the excitement in their faces. They don’t get this in their own country so it’s very exciting to see their faces.”
This is the 3rd time teachers have participated and say they hope to keep this tradition going for years to come.
