Local tie to the late David Lynch

WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) — We learned Thursday that director David Lynch died just days before his 79th birthday. Well, he has a local tie.
David Lynch wrote and directed the 1986 thriller “Blue Velvet” which was filmed right here in Wilmington.
Johnny Griffin, director of the Regional Film Commission worked alongside Lynch on “Blue Velvet” as one of his first projects.
Although Lynch and Griffin didn’t work very closely together, there is one thing that he remembers about Lynch.
“Just quirky but just kind of fit his style was that he wore the same, not the same exact clothes, but the same outfit every day. He wore a pair of khaki pants, he wore a white starched long-sleeve shirt, and a black blazer. In the summer in Wilmington! That is what he wore every single day to work,” Griffin said.
The location and cause of death was not immediately available but in 2024 Lynch announced he was diagnosed with emphysema.
On Friday, outside of the Carolina Apartments on 5th and Market Street in Wilmington there was a memorial honoring the filmmaker.
